Jefferson County Immigrant Rights Advocates will host a grand opening of their new Multicultural Center across two days this week.

The opening is planned for Friday, June 9 and Sunday,
June 11 at the location of the new center, 2328 Washington St., Port Townsend.

Residents are welcome to attend either or both events.

The open house is 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, and features Camelia Jade, a singer and guitarist from Chile, and a proclamation to be read by Port Townsend Mayor David Faber, making June National Immigrant Heritage Month in the city. It will also recognize the contributions of immigrants to our society and acknowledge the work Jefferson County Immigrant Rights Advocates has done on behalf of immigrants and asylum seekers locally.

“The support from the city is gratifying,” said Larry Jensen, president of the nonprofit’s board. “The center will not only help us to do more for immigrants, we are also offering programs for the public that will help build ties throughout the community.”

The fiesta atmosphere will be enlivened by D.J. David Bonobo from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 11 as the party flows onto the patio of the Hacienda Tizapan restaurant next door, where a taco bar will be set up.

Both events will have music, refreshments and activities for children and adults.

“I’m really excited about the grand opening,” said Natalia Duran, an outreach coordinator for the organization. “I hope people come to learn more about JCIRA, to get to know us and see why the center is such a special place.”

The facility offers a place where immigrants can get help to find legal, financial, and educational resources, and attend presentations on healthcare and other social services. Representatives of the organization note the center is already becoming a vibrant community hub for cultural exchange, with multiple programs, including English and Spanish language classes, and even Zumba.

A children’s corner, stocked with toys and books, is also set up for younger visitors to visit with their families.
