Mountain View pool to re-open Monday

The city of Port Townsend and Olympic Peninsula YMCA announced that the Mountain View Pool will reopen to the public next week.

Starting on Monday, Oct. 25, residents will be able to use the pool to exercise from 7 to 11 a.m. Additionally, pool staff have added a new check-in desk, freshly painted sections of the property, cleaned locker rooms, and newly added family changing rooms with all-gender bathrooms.

The city has invested around $40,000 on equipment with upgraded safety and mechanical components to keep the pool consistently open in the future.

“We finally have a go-forward position thanks to huge sacrifices and understanding from the dedicated users of the pool, from endless efforts from our facilities and pool teams and from the dynamic and collaborative infusion of energy and know-how from the Olympic Peninsula YMCA,” said City Manager John Mauro.

Over the past year and a half, the Mountain View Pool has encountered multiple equipment failures and staff shortages that have shut down the pool. The city approved a contract with the Olympic Peninsula YMCA in August for the nonprofit to take over operations for the facility.

“We are thrilled to work with the city and community to re-open the pool. Pool users will see some exciting changes and a step up in the pool experience over time,” said Wendy Bart, CEO of the Olympic Peninsula YMCA.

Additionally, Rowen Matkins was hired to take over as the pool manager in September.

With the pool reopening, staff hope to keep the facility open consistently while improving programs and opportunities at the pool over time.
