Monday’s heavy winds cause closures, minor outage

Jefferson County dodged any major impacts from a windstorm that swept Western Washington Monday night and left thousands without power.

Gusts of up to 50 mph were forecast for Port Townsend, but the Jefferson County Public Utility District reported no outages overnight in town.

A minor power outage was reported in Quilcene, however, and the wind shut down the Hood Canal Bridge just before 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20. The span was closed and reopened multiple times Monday night.

A total of 92 PUD customers in the Quilcene and Dabob Peninsula area were without electricity for roughly five hours.

Strong winds continued to have an impact Tuesday, as Washington State Ferries canceled early morning sailings on the Port Townsend-Coupeville route.
