Missing hiker found after four days near Mount Steel

A hiker who went missing in Olympic National Park last week was found Sunday morning.

Cheri Keller, 56, was located at approximately 11 a.m Aug. 8 east of Mount Steel after four days alone in the wilderness. She was found by King County Sheriff’s Office’s Guardian II helicopter.

Keller was taken via helicopter to the Sanderson Field Airport in Shelton, according to Olympic National Park spokesperson Penny Wagner, where an ambulance transported her to Mason County Hospital.

Keller was reported to be in stable condition Sunday.

Keller, a resident of Olympia, was separated from her hiking group on Wednesday, Aug. 4, and reported missing about 24 hours after failing to rejoin her hiking group at Camp Pleasant.

Two members of her group hiked to the Staircase Station to report Keller’s status, while the rest of the hikers backtracked to where Keller was last seen, near Home Sweet Home camp, where the group had stopped  for water.

In addition to Olympic National Park staff, a flood of search-and-rescue teams and crews assisted in the search for Keller, including Tacoma Mountain Rescue; Olympic Mountain Rescue; Washington State Search and Rescue Planning Unit;  North Cascades National Park; and Mount Rainier National Park. Also assisting were the Kitsap unit of Washington Explorer Search and Rescue, the Washington Department of Corrections tracking team, and two additional canine teams from Kitsap County Search Dogs.

Keller’s hiking party had obtained a wilderness hiking permit to spend four days hiking from the Duckabush trailed head over to Staircase.
