A 43-year-old Hansville man has been charged with making death threats and possession of a stolen firearm after he allegedly started shooting a .45-caliber pistol at a bonfire party on Marrowstone Island last month.

Fritz Frederick Cowing Sr. was arrested in Nordland just after 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18.

Deputies were called to Paddock Road after witnesses said Cowing arrived at the party intoxicated and upset over a recent breakup with his girlfriend.

Cowing was acting erratic, according to one witness at the party, and said he started firing shots in the air as he stood near others. One person who called 911 told dispatchers the situation was “rad.”

As deputies responded, Cowing left the party in a white Cadillac and several people went out looking for him, according to court documents.

Cowing then returned to the Paddock Road property, and started yelling, threatened to kill everyone in the house, and started shooting randomly in the air, according to a probable cause report.

Witnesses said six shots were fired before two other people at the party forcefully took the handgun away from Cowing.

Deputies recovered five shell casings from rounds that had been fired near the front porch of the home and in the front yard. Another live round was found near the steps to the porch, according to court papers.

A deputy found Cowing in the front seat of his Cadillac with a cut lip and a swollen left eye. He denied have a gun or firing one.

A handgun was recovered by law enforcement; a Charles Daly .45-caliber pistol that had been reported stolen in April 2017 in Kitsap County.

Deputies were later told by a witness that when the handgun was taken inside the house by someone at the party, Cowing allegedly said: “Whoever ended up with that gun, isn’t going to want it.”

After he was read his rights, Cowing allegedly admitted to firing one round from the gun on the night of his arrest.

He was taken to Jefferson Healthcare Medical Center for an evaluation of his injuries before he was booked into Jefferson County Jail.

Cowing was arraigned Feb. 24 in Jefferson County Superior Court on charges of harassment/threats to kill while armed with a firearm, possessing a stolen firearm, and aiming or discharging a firearm.

He entered pleading of not guilty to all charges.

Judge Mindy Walker set Cowing’s trial for May 15 through May 18.

Harassment/threats to kill is a felony charge that can result in a maximum prison sentence of five years and a $10,000 fine on conviction.

Conviction of possessing a stolen firearm can result in a maximum penalty of 10 years and a $20,000 fine.

Aiming or discharging a firearm has a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail and a $5,000 fine.
