Man arrested after 100-mph car chase in Clallam, Jefferson counties

A 24-year-old Port Orchard man was arrested after leading police on a two-county chase in a stolen car with speeds surpassing 100 mph.

Authorities said three juvenile passengers were in the vehicle as it eluded officers in Clallam County and then crossed over into Jefferson County.

Evan Skyler King was arrested just after 4 a.m. Monday, March 20.

The chase started more than an hour earlier as Clallam County deputies tried to stop a driver who was headed east on US Highway 101 for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Authorities said the vehicle was going more than 80 miles an hour and was taking up both lanes of the highway, eventually hitting speeds of 100 and forcing logging trucks off the road.

Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office set up spike strips near Highway 104 and Center Road to stop the sedan, but the driver turned south onto US 101 toward Quilcene before getting to the place where the spike strips had been set.

Clallam deputies broke off the pursuit.

Deputies from Jefferson County stayed in the Quilcene area to watch traffic, and soon saw a white Honda two-door car headed north on Center Road.

The driver was speeding over the 50 mph limit, and soon hit 68 mph, according to one radar test.

A Jefferson County deputy attempted to pull over the driver, but the car kept going until it finally pulled into a private driveway. A deputy saw three people bail out of the Honda just as it stopped.

Deputies soon discovered the Honda had been reported stolen in Port Orchard on March 19.

Inside the vehicle, deputies found tin foil and suspected fentanyl on the dashboard. A torch was nearby.

Suspected burglary tools were found in the car, as well, including gloves and a grinder. Several backpacks and cell phones were also inside.

Deputies called in the department’s drone. Two of the occupants of the car, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old, were found hiding under the porch of the home on the property.

One of the juveniles had been reported as a runaway and was wanted on warrants. The other teen was later released to a family member.

The driver of the car, later identified as King, was found hiding on the other side of a creek bed in heavy brush.

Deputies determined his most recent criminal history included possession of a stolen vehicle, first-degree driving with a suspended license, and attempting to elude police.

King showed signs of impairment and a blood draw was taken.

King is facing charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle; obstructing a law enforcement officer, first-degree driving with a suspended or revoked license; and second-degree criminal trespass.

He was originally arrested for obstructing a law enforcement officer, failure to stop/obey an officer, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, eluding a police vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, driving with a suspended license, and theft of a motor vehicle.

King was still in custody in the Jefferson County Jail on Tuesday, with bail set at $10,000.

His arraignment in Jefferson County Superior Court has been scheduled for Friday, March 31.
