As the leading participants in the Port Townsend Sailing Association’s Whitecap Series Race 6 readied to round the large green buoy near the entrance to Kilisut Harbor, they were greeted by a surprise guest who had been sunning atop the buoy.
The steller sea lion had been partially obstructed from the sailors view due to the listing buoy, likely attributable to the mammal’s significant heft. As the passing boats rousted the sleepy mariner, it quickly slipped into the water and swam away.
