The Fort Worden bocce courts played host to 80 athletes and volunteers for some friendly bocce competition July 15.
The event, hosted by the Jefferson County Warriors, brought together teams from Kitsap, Clallam and Jefferson Counties.
The round robin event saw 48 athletes compete in pairs.
“The event offered an opportunity for bocce athletes across the peninsula to meet other athletes, engage in friendly competition and prepare for the upcoming southwest regional Special Olympics tournament to be held in Olympia. The success of the event was seen in the smiles of the athletes and due to the efforts of the many volunteers who ran the event, the Port Townsend Petanque Alliance for their support and use of equipment, Fort Worden, and the team coaches,” Kim Rafferty wrote in her piece for The Leader.
Special Olympics offers sporting activities year round, she added, broken into four seasons. All ages are welcome.
Teams are currently looking for volunteers and athletes.

Jefferson County Special Olympics is rebuilding sport opportunities to include options across all competitive seasons.

A kiss, also called a “baci” refers to a situation in which a bocce ball is touching or “kissing” the pallino (a smaller, target ball). Lagging is the basic throw in which a player tries to roll the ball as close to the pallino as possible.
