The 34th annual Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race needs Kinetic Kops. Join in the krazy fun by attending a Kinetic Kop volunteer meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at the Marvin G. Shields Memorial American Legion Hall, 209 Monroe St., Port Townsend.
Kinetic Kops play an important role in managing the chaos of Kinetics, helping to direct the flow of people and machines and keep the race safe for children and other Glorious Spectators.
Volunteers are expected to show up for the Wannabe Parade on Saturday, Oct. 1 from low noon to 4 p.m. (ish), and for the race on Sunday, Oct. 2. (Sunday times vary with postings, which are assigned at the Sept. 29 meeting).
K-Kop volunteers get a free T-shirt, a pass to the Rosehips Kween Koronation Ball, and other goodies.
A kinetic skulpture is a human-powered, artistically enhanced vehicle that must go through sand (Fort Worden kwicksand), mud (The Dismal Bog at the fairgrounds), float on water (Port Townsend Bay) and transverse hilly, silly neighborhoods. Some skulptures are engineering marvels while most are a mixture of bicycle parts, styrofoam, duct tape, imagination and prayers.
