I strongly support East Jefferson Fire Rescue’s ballot measures to increase funding for fire and emergency services.
I was in my first term on city council when we last voted to increase the district’s levy rates. I’m amazed EJFR has been operating successfully since 2011 without returning to us before now. The 1 percent statutory cap on levy increases is a challenge when inflation is 2 percent. It’s an impossibility at 6 percent. And that’s with incidents increasing nearly 50 percent. Even so, the district is not asking for all they could - the maximum rate for fire services would be $1.50. They’re seeking $1.30.
Coming together to provide for emergency services is one of the definitions of community. None of us WANTS to need the services that EJFR provides. But we want them delivered with speed, skill, and comfort when we do, and EJFR reliably supplies all three, day after day, year after year.
One of the best parts of my eight years on council was getting to know the first responders who show up when the call goes out. Please join with me to ensure they have the training and the resources they need to continue providing these essential services to our community.
