Face masks are no longer required for everyone in Jefferson County.
Jefferson County Health Officer Dr. Thomas Locke announced Wednesday that he has rescinded the order he put in place last May that required people indoors to wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
People who have not received vaccinations for COVID-19 must still wear masks indoors, the health department said.
County health officials also said some state and federal masking rules remain in place.
Masks are still required on public transportation, and in schools, health care settings, congregate living facilities (including assisted living facilities and homeless shelters), and jails and prisons.
Many statewide COVID restrictions — including reduced capacity levels in restaurants and bars — were lifted June 30 in Washington.
Officials noted Wednesday the progress that has been made in the fight against the coronavirus.
According to Jefferson County Public Health, 64 percent of residents in the county have been fully vaccinated.
That number makes Jefferson County the second-most vaccinated county in Washington state.
Even so, local health officials stressed the pandemic is not over.
Slowing vaccination rates and the spread of highly transmissible variants of COVID-19 make it likely that large-scale outbreaks will continue to happen and worsen in the fall and winter, officials said.
