Middle school wrestlers from Chimacum and Port Townsend competed in their third competition of the season last week in Sequim, and finished with a 25-16 record after a night of 41 matches.

“Middle school wrestling participation numbers continue to climb as our season progresses,” noted Coach Ryan White, who said the meet was led by Jackson Dupuy and Caleb Johnson, two Chimacum eighth-graders who were chosen to be captains for the night.

“Once again, three of our athletes popped for our team,” Coach Joe Banks added.

“Sixth-grader Key Matter-Williams wrestled in his first event tonight. His first match he was leading 3-2 with 15 seconds left in the final round. His Forks opponent fought through a reversal and claimed the win, but Key showed tonight that he is an up and coming wrestler in our room,” Banks said.

Other wrestlers from the team also earned kudos.

“Kaleb Kruse is a multi-sport athlete that excels in whatever sport he attempts,” Coach Steve Grimm said of the eighth-grade grappler.

“We have watched him lead the pack over the last few years in many sports, including cross country, football, basketball, and now wrestling,” Grimm added. “He currently leads the team in overall record, remaining undefeated with a 7-0 record against some very accomplished wrestlers. Kaleb is a quite leader in our practice room who leads by setting a great example that not only is practice important, perfect practice is important. That is a quote from 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Jordan Borroughs that Kaleb has seemed to take to heart.”

“Seventh-grader Zeke Banks has really stepped up his aggressiveness at the last two meets,” noted Coach Jim Wilcox. “Tonight, he won two matches and is coming out firing! Zeke has an explosiveness to his wrestling style that pumps up his teammates.”
