Jefferson County commissioners signed off on an agreement Monday to extend for a year the county’s contract to provide jail services to the city of Port Townsend.
The current agreement, approved by the city and county, went into effect Jan. 1, 2018. The contract will now run through Dec. 31, 2021.
County and city officials have been talking about combining three existing interlocal agreements — for jail services, for prosecution services, and for court and indigent defense services — into a single law-and-justice contract.
Extending the jail services contract will give city and county officials time to complete discussions on a combined contract.
Both the city and county expect to reach agreement on a new single law-and-justice agreement by the end of the first quarter of 2021.
Commissioners unanimously agreed to amend the termination date of the existing contract at their meeting Dec. 21.
