Port Townsend resident and highly acclaimed instructor of movement Bill Evans will be offering community dance courses for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Evans will offer two separate courses, starting on Jan. 3 and Jan. 7 at the Madrona MindBody Institute in Fort Worden State Park.

The first course, designed for people of all ages with little to no dance experience, welcomes participants to explore basic human movement and discover how people have evolved to move and how they can be more in harmony with the body’s needs.

Titled “Motion is Lotion,” the course will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. “Motion is Lotion” starts Jan. 3 and ends May 2, with the goals being to move with greater efficiency, deeper awareness, and more satisfaction with fewer injuries.

The second course is designed for people of all ages with some dance experience and will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on six consecutive Saturdays, starting on Jan. 7. The course is titled “Somatic Dance Lab,” and the sessions will honor bodily wisdom, explore fundamental human movement, and investigate dynamic alignment through imagery. Each class will include improvisational explorations of the concepts unpacked in that session. The course ends Feb. 11.

To register for “Motion is Lotion” or “Somatic Dance Lab,” visit madronamindbody.com.

Evans is a renowned teacher of dance and movement who became a full-time Port Townsend resident in 2018. His new book, “Teaching What You Want to Learn: A Guidebook for Dance and Movement Teachers,” was recently published by Routledge Books of the United Kingdom.
