Hit-and-run charges pending in Port Townsend roundabout crash

Posted

A Port Townsend man is facing charges of hit-and-run following a collision last month at the Discovery Road-Rainier Street roundabout.

James Glen Knight II, 52, is also facing a charge of first-degree driving with a suspended license.

The collision happened around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16.

Prosecutors allege that Knight was driving a 2000 Honda Accord when he rear-ended a 2015 Toyota Highlander driven by a 48-year-old Quilcene woman.

The woman, who said she had dizziness and whiplash, said the Honda driver hit her in the roundabout, then got out of the car, asked to use her phone, made a call, and then walked away from the crash scene.

She also said the other driver asked someone who was driving past to take him away because he did not have a driver’s license.

The woman said a passenger, later identified as a 16-year-old boy, also left the scene, but eventually came back with his mother.

A Port Townsend police officer interviewed the teen and his mother when they returned. The Honda was registered to the woman, and she identified the man who was driving the Accord as Knight, whom she said she had been dating.

The teen had been a passenger in the vehicle, and a seat-belt bruise could clearly be seen across his chest that was consistent with someone who had been sitting in the car as a passenger. The Accord had substantial front-end damage and an air bag had deployed.

The teen told police he was getting a ride to an appointment, but Knight had stopped at the car wash. The stop took longer than it should have, he said, and his mother got angry and yelled.

The teen said Knight got mad and “gunned it” as the Honda neared the roundabout. The other vehicle was just driving by, the teen said, when Knight hit it.

A friend of the boy’s mother pulled up right after the collision. The friend told police that Knight had been driving and wanted to leave the scene in her car.

The friend’s husband was in the car, she told police, and he told Knight “No way,” adding that would be leaving the scene of an accident and they would get in trouble, according to an incident report by Port Townsend police.

Knight then allegedly took a bicycle that he had in the back of the car and rode away, according to court documents.

Police later obtained video from the car wash that showed the Honda arriving at the business at 11:47 a.m. and a man doing things around the car.

The manager of the apartment complex where the owner of the Honda lives also told police she saw Knight drive away that morning in the woman’s car.

A summons for Knight to appear in Jefferson County Superior Court was issued July 14.
