History comes to life at Fort Worden

Fans of Fort Worden’s storied past have the opportunity to see more of its wartime glory.

A free public “mini museum” will educate and entertain at Fort Worden from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3.

The 9th District Coast Artillery Living Historians are visiting to represent the 248th Coast Artillery Regiment, circa 1940-1941. The 248th was stationed at Fort Worden during that time period.

The display will take place outside the Puget Sound Coast Artillery Museum (Building 201) including uniforms and gear, a historic vehicle (Model 1940 Dodge VC weapons carrier), a complete anti-aircraft battery commander’s observation scope, and possibly a non-operable M2 .50-caliber MG on its M3 mount.

The Living History volunteers will be using the Port Townsend-Coupeville ferry from their home base at Fort Casey Historical State Park, so don’t be surprised if you see their old iron warhorse tooling through Port Townsend.

The refurbished Coast Artillery Museum in Building 201 is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. The museum is a volunteer, nonprofit operation which has enjoyed record numbers of public visitors this summer, association officials noted.
