Fishing boat sinks while docked at Boat Haven Marina

A recreational fishing boat sank while docked in the Boat Haven Marina last week.

Harbormaster Kristian Ferrero received a call around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4 alerting him that the vessel was sinking.

“By the time I was able to get down there it was well beyond anything I could do about it,” he said.

“All I found was a boat that was basically underwater well beyond what our pumps could do,” Ferrero added.

The boat was an aluminum Hewescraft recreational vessel named “Fighter Pirate” approximately 32 to 34 feet in length. This style of boat is primarily used by recreational fisherman, Ferrero said.

As work began to get the boat out of the water, the early fall sun began to set. Luckily, the marina’s new 75-ton lift is equipped with lights and they were able to safely get the boat out of the water by 8:30 p.m.

It was the second boat to sink in less than one week’s time. The first came just days earlier on Sept. 29 when a wooden trawler sank about one nautical mile off of the marina.

“I only hope that they don’t come in threes,” Ferrero said.
