Fire commissioners vote unanimously in favor of merger

Now it’s up to the Port Ludlow citizenry to decide.

Resolutions were simultaneously though separately passed by both East Jefferson Fire Rescue and Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue boards in support of the merger of the fire districts that Port Ludlow will vote on in the coming election.

The approval of support was unanimous from both boards in a special concurrent meeting Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Though Port Ludlow Commissioner Robert Pontius was unable to attend, he sent a written comment expressing his full support, as well.

“Now that both boards have ratified the measures, they can speak to the public without having a disclaimer,” said East Jefferson Fire Chief Bret Black.

“They can speak freely to the public when they’re out and about,” he added.

East Jefferson Commissioner Dave Seabrook made sure to note that there were still some restrictions as to how far the boards can push their support.

“We still adhere to the state law that says we can’t use funds to promote,” he said.

“I think this is a momentous occasion,” Seabrook added.

To further communicate information about the proposed merger, three informational meetings have been scheduled so far at the Port Ludlow Marina Tent with more planned: 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3; 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4; and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5.
