Farmers market has new booth that’s ripe for readers

In addition to local goods and produce, there’s a book booth at the Port Townsend Farmers Market.

The Port Townsend Public Library has been selling new to gently used donated books at the market since May. After taking September off, they’ll resume on Saturday, Oct. 9. Following dates include Oct. 23, Nov. 6 and Nov. 20, and Dec. 4.

Unless inclement weather hits, Friends of the Library will be manning the booth from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“It’s been working really well,” said Cheryl Bentley, Friends of the Library board member and book-sale coordinator.

The library is funded by the city, but all programming is supported by donations and book sales.

Unfortunately, the library has canceled its upcoming fall sale due to COVID, which makes participation in the pop-up book sales even more important.

So far, the friends have made $3,000 from farmers market sales. Augmented by online book sales, donations, in-library sales, and a large purchase of stored books, they have $14,642 to work with. In contrast, the organization generally has about $20,000 to $30,000 for its financial footing.

“One way or another, we will come up with the money,” Bentley said.

Friends of the Library is currently seeking new and gently used paperback or hardcover books for their pop-up booth at the farmers market.

“We’re only selling the best that we can find,” she added.

Books can be deposited in the large bin in the parking lot at 1220 Lawrence St. in Port Townsend.

Bentley expressed her gratitude for the generosity of the community, and in general, for supporters of the library.

“We hope to be having a regular book sale,” Bentley said.

The date event is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 19.
