Farewells for Jefferson County Commissioner Sullivan start to come in

The accolades are starting to pile up for Jefferson County Commissioner David Sullivan.

Sullivan’s term on the board of commissioners wraps up at the end of the year.

Sullivan, who was first elected to the District 2 position in 2004, decided against seeking a fifth term earlier this year.

County Administrator Philip Morley thanked Sullivan for his service at last week’s board meeting.

“A large part of who and what we are today is because of you. Thank you for that,” Morley said.

Morley also praised the two candidates in the November election who ran to replace the veteran commissioner: winner Heidi Eisenhour and fellow challenger Lorna Smith.

“I’m thankful for both Lorna Smith and Heidi Eisenhour for putting their hats in the ring, and with good hearts and spirit, wishing to serve the citizens of Jefferson County,” Morley said.

He added he was looking forward to working with Eisenhour.

“I think she brings a lot of integrity, great knowledge of the community, and I think she will be great partner to Greg [Brotherton] and to Kate [Dean],” he said, noting the other two county commissioners.

“And importantly, gets us back to a two-woman majority,” Morley added.

Dean was also elected this November to the board; she ran unopposed for a second term.

Dean jokingly added that now Brotherton will serve alongside a pair of Geoducks — two graduates from The Evergreen State College.

Brotherton said he didn’t know if the board ever had boasted a Geoduck majority.

“We know more than most people the sacrifices it takes to run for office,” Brotherton added. “It’s hard to campaign and this year was a challenge unlike any other.”

He congratulated both Smith and Eisenhour on their campaigns.

In a note to commissioners the day before the meeting, Eisenhour told her fellow commissioners she was excited to join the team.

“It’s been a wild ride this past week,” Eisenhour wrote in an email that came at the end of the week for the 2020 General Election.

“Thankfully, I look forward to working with you for the years ahead,” she added. “We have a fantastic community with so many challenges and aspirations to navigate. Let’s lead the way to a better future for people in Jefferson County.”
