Eclectics test their irons in the woods

Posted

Sunny skies and warm temperatures brought more than 20 women to their local clubs for competition this week.  Port Townsend Ladies Club played Bingo Bango Bongo scoring points for being first on the green, closest to the pin and one putting the hole. The first place winner was Vicki Young with 11 points; tied for second were Barb Aldrich and Katherine Buchanan with nine points and third place was carded by Lynn Bidlake with eight points.

The Discovery Bay Women’s Club (DBWC) played their second round of the Captain’s Cup Eclectic Championship with the final round to be played July 27.  In addition to the cup play, the women played Putt For Dough. Always the challenge for a low scoring round, putting well is essential to a good golf score - 36 putts is regulation for 18 holes.

Thursday’s winner with 33 putts was Eileen Stretch; Second place with 34 putts was Lynn Pierle, and a tie for third with regulation 36 putts were Barb Aldrich, Cindy Westwood and Meg Fluharty.

Wanda Synnestvedt had the lead in DWBC’s first round of the Captain’s Cup Eclectic championship with only two points.

In a tie for second place with 3 points were Katherine Buchanan and Jane Peoples. Another tie for third place was carded by Marianne Ott and Cindy Breed. In a tie for low putts of the round were Wanda Synnestvedt and Jane Peoples, each with 31 putts.  Following the round the ladies, who brought snacks to share, were entertained with music by Will and Jane Peoples playing the guitar, harmonica and washboard.

This club competition consists of two 18 hole rounds with the better score of each hole being carded for a complete 18 hole round. The competition is played on the red tees for GROSS winner and on the silver tees for NET winner.  Each player must complete two 18-hole rounds within a three date schedule.

The second round will be played this Thursday. In addition to the players competing for the championship, a game of the week was played as well.

In order to sharpen the players’ focus on each shot, the game of the week was Disaster.

A demerit point is accumulated for each “mistake” made; e.g. hitting a tree, landing in a bunker, going out of bounds or into a hazard, three putting a green and so on.

The player with the lowest number of points wins the competition.
