Dry greens lead to low scores

The rain held off on an early April Tuesday when nine women teed off for their second game of the season. With handicaps established, the game of the day was low net. Competition was tight with the first four places at 39-42.  Winner of low net with 39 was Lynn Bidlake, followed by Barb Aldrich at 40, Rita Beebe at 41 and Robin West at 42. Many of the club women are signed up to play in a tournament scramble April 20 for the Rhody Reveal tournament. A portion of the monies raised will go to support the 2024 Rhododendron Festival in May. Activities at the Port Townsend Golf Park are gearing up this spring. Be a part of the new community outreach. Play as a visiting golfer with the Women's Club. Call for information about the Tuesday tee times at 10 a.m. at the pro shop at 360-385-4547.

Nine Discovery Bay Women teed off Thursday for an 18-hole Ambrose scramble. Three-person teams competed for low net scores and a minimum number of putts. The scramble format begins with each player teeing off; the players then move to the best-positioned ball. From that location, each member of the team places her ball and shoots again. This best-positioned ball play is followed to the green where the ball (usually closest to the pin) is marked for each player to putt.  Usually in a scramble each player on the team is required to use one or more of her drives off the tee. This ensures that all golfers participate rather than have one player use her long drives on every hole. A team score is recorded rather than individual player scores. Teams are assigned handicaps based on an average of the handicaps of the players on the team. Every effort is made by play organizers to put together balanced teams.

The first-place team of Cindy Breed, Suzie Piper and Meg Fluharty had a net score of 68. The second-place team with a 72 were Barb Aldrich, Lynn Pierle and Cindy Westwood. Third place with 73 was the team of Jane Guiltinan, Jodi Stone and Wanda Synnestvedt. The second-place team of Aldrich, Pierle and Westwood needed only 24 putts out of regulation 36 to finish their round.  The Game of the Week for the next April outing is “Criers and Whiners,” wherein each player is entitled to take a specific number of Mulligans (do-overs) during the golf round.
