Driver arrested for felony DUI at state park

A 57-year-old Goldendale man was jailed on $200,000 bail after he was arrested for felony driving under the influence earlier this month at Dosewallips State Park.

Forrest Ethan Wanous made his first appearance March 17 in Jefferson County Superior Court.

Wanous was charged with felony DUI and for operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock.

Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor Chris Ashcraft said Wanous had six prior DUIs, with four of those offenses happening in the last six years.

In the most recent incident, the Washington State Patrol was called to Dosewallips State Park just after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7.

A parks employee said he witnessed the driver of a light blue sedan, later identified as Wanous, stumbling away from the ranger station toward his running car.

The parks employee said he approached the man, who had an “overwhelming smell of intoxicants,” according to court documents, and multiple bottles of alcohol could be seen in the sedan.

When asked by a state trooper how much he had to drink, Wanous allegedly answered something to the effect of, “not much, I’m an alcoholic.”

Wanous failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest. Multiple empty beer cans were found inside the vehicle, along with shot glasses of Fireball Whisky. He declined to take a breath test, and was taken to Jefferson Healthcare Medical Center in Port Townsend after a judge approved a blood search warrant.

He was also cited by a park ranger for illegal oysters Wanous allegedly had in the back of his car.

Authorities said Wanous was required to have an ignition interlock device in his vehicle, but didn’t, at the time of his arrest.

Ashcraft asked Superior Court Judge Brandon Mack to set bail at $200,000.

“We believe he’s dangerous to the community,” Ashcraft said.

Mack agreed to the recommendation.

Wanous will be arraigned on the charges Friday, March 24.

Conviction of felony DUI can result in a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
