Collision with logging truck closes US 101

US Highway 101 was closed for about four hours Friday, Dec. 16 after a car hit a logging truck near the summit of Mount Walker.

Only minor injuries were reported though both vehicles had to be towed away.

The collision was reported at 5:45 a.m. near Milepost 301.

A woman heading to work in Silverdale was going south on US 101 but crossed the center line, striking the truck and spilling logs onto the roadway.

“The car ripped the rear axle off of the logging truck and created about a 400- to 500-foot area of debris of logs,” said Brinnon Fire Chief Tim Manly.

“The logs started bouncing down the road and hit the cab and damaged the truck pretty severely. The logs then started causing problems because they were moving at the speed limit,” Manly said.

Road conditions were bare and wet with temperatures in the high 30s, Manly said.

The driver of a Subaru four-door sedan did not recall what caused her to cross the center line.

“She’s lucky she’s not dead,” Manly said.

After loading the logs onto another logging truck and towing the vehicles away, a road sweeper was dispatched to clear the rest of the debris.
