The Port Townsend City Council unanimously approved a three-year contract renewal for trash and recycling containers from BigBelly Connect LX, a Massachusetts-based trash and recycling bin company.
There are 10 BigBelly trash and recycling bins located around downtown Port Townsend and Uptown, and the high-tech waste containers provide automated system diagnostics and alerts, allowing for more efficient collection and disposal for the city.
The three-year renewal will cost the city $55,000, and the cost of the contract has historically been budgeted 50-50 between the municipality’s streets and lodging taxes.
The BigBelly bins have been a good addition to downtown and Uptown and are highly utilized, according to city staff.
The containers allow for both the city and Olympic Disposal — Port Townsend’s contracted garbage, recycling, and yard waste service — to monitor usage rates for the bins and allow for more efficient collection.
The contract is set to go until 2026.
