Chameleon Theater presents 24 hours of improv

“It was 3 a.m. Everyone was on stage. They did an improvised musical, speaking only gibberish,” said Jae Dvorak, offering her favorite moment from last year’s Improvathon, at the Chameleon Theater.

This year’s Improvathon – 24 hours of continuous improv just for the fun of it – is back, and more unbelievable than ever. The event features many familiar faces from Jefferson County’s theater world at the Chameleon Theater beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 3 and ending Saturday, June 4.

Throughout the night, anyone can participate in and/or watch the many improvisation structures. From 4 to 5 a.m., for example, performers will create scenes based on audience-suggested movie genres.

“Many of the actors tell me they will be spending the night again,” said Joey Pipia, the theater’s artistic director. “Admission is by donation, and once you’re in, you may come and go as you please.”

“The Improvised Cooking Show” wakes everyone up with waffles at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Actors returning from New York City and Seattle join local thespians to re-create the successful Saturday-morning favorite. The show is improvised, but the waffles are real. Anyone at the theater is welcome.

Closing the show at 7 p.m. on Saturday is a performance featuring all the members of the Chairs improv troupe presenting a completely improvised play based on a title suggested on the spot from someone in the audience.

The Chameleon Theater is located at 800 Park Ave. For more information, contact 379-1068 or joey@olympus.net.
