Greg Brotherton and Marcia Kelbon were on track to advance to November as the top two candidates in the race for the District 3 seat on the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners.

Brotherton, a Democrat, and Kelbon, a Republican, were leading Republican Jon Cooke in the three-way Primary Election race after the first vote tally on Election Night.

Brotherton had 56.2 percent of the vote in the initial count Aug. 2, followed by Kelbon, with 31.5 percent.

Brotherton is seeking a second term on the board of commissioners, while Kelbon was taking her first shot at elected office.

Cooke, who unsuccessfully ran against Brotherton for the seat four years ago, had 12 percent of all ballots cast.

A total of 3,524 ballots were counted Tuesday night in the commissioner's race. There were three write-in ballots cast.

The initial vote count was Brotherton with 1,981 votes, followed by Kelbon with 1,111, and Cooke with 429.

The race for the District 3 position was the sole three-candidate race on this yearh's Primary Election ballot. Other races for county positions — prosecuting attorney, treasurer, clerk, auditor, and assessor — had only one candidate on the ballot.

In the contest for county sheriff, Joe Nole, the incumbent, was leading challenger Art Frank.

Nole had 71.7 percent of the vote, while Frank had 27.5 percent, in the initial count.

The unofficial first tally had Nole with 7,006 votes, and Frank with 2,694.

Both Nole and Frank will advance to November's General Election.

Additional ballots will be counted in the days ahead.
