A broken sewer main has led to the closure of a section of Water and Gaines streets in Port Townsend.
City officials said the broken pipe was discovered after raw sewage had spilled into the street. The main had "completely failed," causing a sewer backup on Tuesday morning.
The broken sewer main is near the intersection of Water Street and Gaines Street.
The line carries relatively high flows of sewage, and the city said the sewer main serves all of downtown and most of Uptown.
According to the city, crews "stabilized the situation" Tuesday by using pumps to bypass the broken section of pipe.
The sewer main break is located on Water Street between the Wells Fargo Bank access on Gaines Street and the intersection of Sims Way and Water Street.
Officials said no sewage flowed directly into Port Townsend Bay.
Emergency repairs are planned, and the city said it will contract with Seton Construction to fix the main.
The area will remain closed, but access will be maintained to adjacent businesses, and the sidewalks on the east side of Gaines Street and the north side of Water Street will stay open.
