The Port Ludlow Art League is pleased to welcome Nonie Gaines as the speaker for its November Program Meeting.
An award-winning groundbreaker in public school art education in Tucson, Nonie is a recognized painter of surrealistic desert-inspired landscapes. Since moving to Port Townsend, Nonie has received accolades for her Wearable Art Show pieces; all the while continuing to create art in various media, including oil painting, mixed media assemblage, and pencil drawing.
Nonie currently teaches art classes at the Northwind Art School.
Nonie's fascination with the natural world is reflected in her finely detailed, colorful drawings. She combines both color and graphite pencil to recreate studies from her travels, encompassing them in an antiqued, hand tooled metal border. This ancient metalworking technique is called repoussé or repoussage. Malleable metal is shaped by tooling from both the front and the back to create a design in relief.
Nonie will demonstrate the process of repoussé and provide all the necessary tools and supplies so that attendees will have the opportunity to try the technique.
The program meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Port Ludlow Bay Club. The Bay Club is located at 120 Spinnaker Place in Port Ludlow. Guests are welcome to attend the meeting for a fee of $5. For more information, please visit www.portludlowart.org.
