Three Port Townsend teenagers were among the 43 archers who competed in an archery competition hosted by the Jefferson County Golden Clovers 4-H Archery Club.
“It’s great hand-eye coordination and it’s fun,” said Loretta Nelson, one of the adults who organized the event.
In addition to the three Jefferson County competitors, the tournament featured seven archers from Clallam and 30 from Kitsap counties.
The event was held on the grounds of the Jefferson County Sportsmen’s Association.
Nelson said the event is now in its 13th year, but Jefferson County is relatively new to the sport, she said.
Competitors may advance to state 4-H championships in Eatonville next month, and on to the nationals after that.
Competitors paid $10 to enter the contest. That money covered the cost of the paper targets, Nelson said.
Nelson’s son, Tyler Nelson, 15, is now in his fourth year as an archer, she said.
Competing with Tyler Nelson was Port Townsend residents Jenessah Seebergoss, 15, and Michaela Steiner.
The tri-county tournament worked under the rules World Archery Federation, formerly known as FITA, or French Fédération Internationale de Tir à l’Arc.
Each round is timed, and archers have three minutes to shoot six arrows. Different distances are used for different classes of archers.
Nelson said the sport of archery is a good way of “keeping kids out of trouble … but mostly it’s fun.”
