Alternative spaces to amplify Art Walk on Sept. 7

Here in Port Townsend, creativity flourishes in all manner of settings beyond the traditional. Venues like hair salons and tasting rooms offer surprising nooks displaying local artwork, while unusual retail shops reveal interactive community space and immersive murals.

During the monthly First Saturday Art Walk on Sept. 7, add some alternative spaces to your list and prepare to be charmed. From 5 to 8 p.m., nearly 20 Port Townsend locations will be open to visitors.

For walkers who are feeling inspired to create, Art Toolkit offers an “adventure art supply” outlet at 1003 Water Street, featuring pocket-sized paint palettes alongside a wide variety of sketchbooks and drawing tools. In a city known for its picturesque outdoor settings, this venue provides a starting point to equip any plein air practice.

At the nearby Castle & Crown Cellars, visitors can sample small-batch wines while perusing paintings and drawings by local artists. Around the corner at 237 Taylor Street, the CoLab will stay open late with an exhibit of photography and paintings displayed in an open-concept gathering space filled with natural light.

At 926 Water Street, KALMA is open during Art Walk sharing handmade goods that honor mortality and celebrate beauty. Tucked inside the shop is a cozy room framed by lush curtains called The Parlor, where owner AJ Hawkins facilitates space for creativity and community care around mourning. Visitors can drop in to write poetry, share coloring books, and enjoy a welcoming space that also features a resource library and peer support gatherings.

Rooted in an aesthetic of forest enchantment, nearby Pendragon’s Labyrinth presents a curated selection of regional art and finely crafted talismans, all displayed in an immersive space that’s awash in detailed murals. Every visit offers a multisensory experience and an opportunity to support local talent.

Down the street at Polk Street Salon, owner Heidi Minnich organizes a floor-to-ceiling gallery of rotating works by a variety of local artists. This month, the 2024 Soundcheck Festival featured artist Etta will display her original painting “Prawn Townsend” there, and visitors can purchase her colorful sticker art.
