Abnormal beers abound at Strange Brewfest

It’s best to be ready for the bizarre when entering Port Townsend.

Beer lovers in particular better buckle up because the unexpected is on the way at Strange Brewfest, celebrating its 17th season of weird beer at the American Legion Hall on Feb. 3 through Feb. 4.

The event, known for bringing in experimental adult beverages, is importing more than 20 breweries and even a couple cideries for the event.

“This year we have sold more tickets than we have in the past,” said Janet Emery, crew boss for Strange Brew.

“We’ve already hit capacity on all the hotels in town,” she added.

While she usually prefers fermented fruits over grains, she has been coerced into tasting a few of the crazy concoctions.

“Geoduck stout. I mean, right? These guys come up with the craziest stuff and send it to me,” Emery said.

Other freaky flavors she remembers include Fruity Pebbles and cotton candy.

This year, Port Townsend Brewing is trying a new spice and also returning to the East with McRae’s Chipotle Amber Ale and the Yoda Green Tea Golden Ale.

The two-day event includes more than just brews, however.

“We encourage people to dress up and have a good time,” Emery said. She also noted masks are welcome but not required.

To make sure there’s plenty to soak up the suds, five local food vendors will be slinging a variety of vittles.

Local glass blower Patrick Forrestal will be there sharing his skills live. He’s known for making colorful hand-blown glass items like bowls, pumpkins, and drinking glasses.

And his molten motions wont be the only heat around here.

Feral Fire Flow Collective will spin their extraordinary embers on Saturday in between funky fresh music sets.

There will be a trunk load of funk throughout the two-day soiree.

Friday night’s concert is expected to feature the music of The Staxx Brothers and Swindler, while on Saturday ELK will open the afternoon, followed by Cozmic Sauce, with Eldridge Gravy playing three sets to end the event.

Mr. Gravy, also known as Joe Simpson, fronts the many-membered band that includes the Lady Gravy and other perplexing personalities like the Kalamazoo Kidd, Pastor Peas, Papa Ganoosh, and Donnie Doller$tack.

“The legend is very mercurial,” Simpson said of the ensemble’s origins. “We had to create kind of a mythology for the group when we first started just to give us a theatrical edge, you know.”

“All of our favorite funk groups like Parliament and everything have mythology, so we decided we should do that, too. It helps with the stage presence to have this other character you create.”

While the hotels may be full for the weekend, organizers say there are still walk-up tickets available.
