4PT Productions, a local non-profit dedicated to producing high quality performance art in Port Townsend, will present a concert by two cutting-edge instrumental ensembles Monday June 19 at the Quimper Unitarian Sanctuary in Port Townsend.
The Westerlies, a Seattle-bred, Brooklyn-based brass ensemble (2 trumpets, 2 trombones) are known to navigate a wide array of venues and projects. Young musicians today routinely resist being pigeonholed into a single genre. Such is the case with this unconventional band, which through its compositions and tight ensemble playing reveals a built-in sympathy for jazz, rigorous classical structures and popular forms from all over the world.
Bringing together four uniquely defined voices of new music, jazz, and improvised composition, and created and lead by Seattle-based pianist and composer Wayne Horvitz, Gravitas Quartet (piano, trumpet, cello, bassoon) explores the depths of texture, sonority, rhythm, and ensemble fluidity available to masters with a broad palette. They have been hailed as forerunners of modern music – each journeying from their vast musical backgrounds to redefine the sonic landscape.
These two master quartets, many of whose members have their roots in the Pacific Northwest and have gone on to perform all over the world, will perform Monday June 19 at 7:30 PM in the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Sanctuary, 2333 San Juan Ave, Port Townsend.
