Wooden Boat Festival hosts ‘Ask an Expert’ winter series

Posted

Back by popular demand, the Wooden Boat Festival’s Winter Series brings experts from all over the region to a unique and engaging Zoom experience. In six Zoom sessions, a variety of authorities in the boating world will discuss topics ranging from ancestral voyaging and green boating to vessel stewardship. Enjoy behind-the-scenes interviews and demos with time to ask  questions from the comfort of your home.

Passes for all six of the series are $35,(which includes on-demand viewing until April 15); individual sessions are $9.99 each. All sales are final.

Nigel Calder will kick off the new year from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, in the presentation, “Can We Electrify our Boating to Reduce our Carbon Footprint?”

Calder will explore the different duty cycles in marine applications and investigate how far we can take electrification with existing and foreseeable technology.

He is best known for his books “Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual,” and “Marine Diesel Engines”, both in their third editions, and both considered the definitive works in their field. In addition to over 200 magazine articles, he has also authored a cruising guide to the Northwest Caribbean, “Cuba: A Cruising Guide,” “Nigel Calder’s Cruising Handbook,” and “How to Read a Nautical Chart.”

The Winter Series runs through March 17. The final virtual event is an open discussion — free to all — with a panel of LGBTQ+ mariners who will share their stories of finding their way in the maritime industry. The panel will be moderated by Susan Brittian, a transgender woman who has been in the industry for more than 40 years.

Tickets and more information on the series can be found at woodenboat.org/ask-an-expert/.
