Woman alleges assault by homeless man in downtown Port Townsend

A 44-year-old homeless man was jailed for fourth-degree assault and third-degree malicious mischief after he allegedly hit a woman in the face with a potted plant in downtown Port Townsend.

Port Townsend police said the man also threatened other people with a stick near the bus stop by the Penny Saver, where he was seen jumping on a car.

Police said the man was yelling and frightening people in the downtown area, and that he had also made threats toward a second woman.

The man is known to police for having suspected substance-abuse issues and mental health concerns, according to court documents.

Police were first called just before 8 p.m. Monday,
June 20 after he hit a window with a stick but did not break it at the Wells Fargo Bank branch on Washington Street.

Officers searched the downtown area for him without success when they were approached by a woman who said the man had confronted her at Taylor and Water streets, and took a potted plant from her and hit her in the face with it.

Officers found him by a staircase that leads to Water Street, but an incident report said the man began running and disappeared in the steep hillside behind the Pizza Factory.

A drone was brought in to search the heavily wooded area, but he was not found.

Officers were called to The Food Co-op about 5 a.m. the next morning after someone was heard yelling in the parking lot.

Police determined it was the same person that they had searched for the previous day, and due to his mental state, officers awaited the arrival of additional officers from the sheriff’s department before contacting the man.

He was gone when officers arrived. About three hours later, however, a detective found the man on the trail at Kah Tai Park, yelling and screaming, and possibly armed with a long pipe and a knife.

Additional officers were called in from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the man was taken into custody without incident.

When asked about what had happened the day before, the man said it was he who was assaulted and the woman who said she was hit with a potted plan “was trying to make a terrorist event out of him,” according to a supplemental report filed in the case. Bail was set at $2,000.
