Recently elected Sequim school director Kristi Schmeck will not be accepting a position on the school board.
In an email dated Nov. 26, Schmeck wrote to Sequim School Board president Brandino Gibson and said: “I’m just letting you know I will not be accepting the position of school board director. I had formally withdrawn from the election the first week of June. According to the PDC [Public Disclosure Commission] they are expecting me to honor my withdrawal.”
Schmeck missed the deadline to officially withdraw from the race, but she did submit a statement of termination of her campaign to the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission on June 4.
Schmeck, who stated that she was withdrawing her candidacy for the school board for personal reasons in early June, won the Primary Election race without campaigning and advanced to the General Election.
In November, Schmeck, 55, won the race against opponent Virginia Sheppard, 79, earning 65 percent of votes to Sheppard’s 33.57 percent.
The four-year position on the five-person school board remains open and school board members are expected to eventually fill the seat with an appointee.
