Why I’m voting Vega for city council | Letter to the editor

Given the Primary Election’s results for Position 5 of Port Townsend City Council, you may think the race is all but over. Yet, I am here to encourage you to consider voting for Tyler Vega this time round. Port Townsend will be better for it.

I know Tyler from working with him to grow a cooperative network for the benefit of our local economy. Tyler’s creative yet reasoned thinking on the challenges facing the community is something we are very much in need of on city council. He is not afraid to get passionate when so called, such as when he spearheaded founding a local maker’s circle to meet PPE needs during the early months of the pandemic.

In addition, I would argue that without the alternative perspective Tyler brings from his diverse life experiences, both as a person of color and as a committed progressive, council will continue to churn away at the same old solutions that fail to address the root problems of our community — exclusionary policies that bolster rural gentrification.

Most importantly, Tyler’s commitment to inclusivity and listening is unsurpassed. He is creative because he is willing to listen; he is cooperative because he is inclusive; and he is a problem solver because he is community-minded. I am voting for Tyler because I trust him to help regenerate city council’s approach to keeping Port Townsend lovable and livable.
