When I Can’t Sleep
I heat milk, add hot water
Cholesterol you know!
If home, I put the heating pad
On my stomach or shoulders or back
Set it low
Low, like the warmth of a newborn baby
Draped across my heart
Sweet and bonding
When I can’t sleep,
I listen to soothing podcasts-
Can’t be El Hilo-too much sadness and violence
Can’t be The Atlantic-too much truth, mayhem and pain
Maybe Fresh Air, Maybe Science Friday (sorry for you Science!)
Maybe Meta Hour
Always BirdNote, Clear and Vivid or The Moth
Oh, thank God for those-
Otherwise I’d be stuck
With my whirly, worrying mind-
About our people and planet,
Affected by Newborn Nazis
Visiting ilk and
Pandemic madness
On our already hurting country and world
Why pile on the pain?
Our fragile planet can’t sleep
When I can’t sleep.
