The water main break earlier this week created a sewage spill that polluted Port Townsend Bay, according to water samples taken by Jefferson County Public Health.
County health officials said testing of the samples showed elevated levels of enterococcus bacteria, an indicator of fecal matter associated with sewage.
The elevated levels were detected after a sewage overflow due to a water main break on Monroe Street Monday evening.
The levels of enterococcus bacteria showed 156 per 100 milliliters of water which is in excess of Washington's allowable level of 104 per 100 milliliters.
Jefferson County Public Health put up signs warning of the danger of having contact with water from Port Townsend Bay near the site of the sewage overflow, and health officials will continue the “No Contact” advisory for the shoreline from Madison Street to the entrance to Point Hudson marina.
The area covered by the order includes Pope Marine Park, the Port Townsend Salmon Club boat ramp and the Northwest Maritime Center.
Additional samples were taken Thursday, Nov. 19 and the advisory will remain in effect until bacteria levels return to normal levels.
