Washington State 2023 Legislative Session kicks off Monday

Posted

The 2023 Legislative Session for the Washington State Legislature starts Monday.

It will be the first in-person legislative session since 2020. Legislative buildings will be open and capacity has been adjusted in legislative hearing rooms, though remote participation will continue to be available.

The 105-day session will begin with opening ceremonies in the state Senate and House of Representatives on Monday.

Opening Day will start with caucus meetings for Senate and House Republicans at 10 a.m. Jan. 9. The House Democratic Caucus will also meet at 10 a.m.

The Senate and the House will both convene at noon.

The first public hearing will be held by the House Environment and Energy Committee at 1:30 p.m. Monday, with the committee considering House Bill 1047 (concerning the use of toxic chemicals in cosmetic products).

Gov. Jay Inslee will deliver the 2023 State of the State address at noon Tuesday, Jan. 10. The address will be streamed live on TVW and C-SPAN.

Housing and homelessness is a top priority for the governor and legislators, according to the governor's office.

Officials note the number of people experiencing homelessness has grown as the state’s housing deficit worsens and home prices rise. Inslee has proposed a $4 billion referendum that would accelerate affordable housing construction across the state.

“If we keep nibbling at this issue, we will never take a big enough bite to solve this problem,” Inslee said during a legislative preview event last week. “This investment would meet the speed and scale we need to build more housing.”
