Vanishing murals tour by historical society start in July

Posted

Coming up in July, the Jefferson County Historical Society will be hosting “Vanishing Murals of Port Townsend: A Walking Tour,” a one-mile trek across Port Townsend to observe the colorful and historic wall advertisements around town.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, advertising murals were ubiquitous throughout the country. Large, vibrant signs painted on buildings once lined the streets of most towns in America, usually advertising a product or service. Municipal property, commercial buildings, and even the sides of barns were covered in ads for everything from shaving cream to beer.

Port Townsend was no different, and these colorful murals contributed to the distinctive character of this busting community at the time.

The public is invited to join the historical society for a 10-stop, one-hour unique take on a historic walking tour and discover these faded “ghost” murals — sometimes hiding in plain sight. Visit jchsmuseum.org for more information.

The walking tours will be available at 11 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays in July and August, and groups are limited to 12. The tour will cost $15 for historical society members and $20 for non-members.
