Two free days are coming for visitors to Washington State Parks in January.
Visitors won't need a Discover Pass for day-use visits on Friday, Jan. 1, and Monday, Jan. 18, in honor of the holiday celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.
The first day of the year is also First Day Hike, a nationwide initiative that aims to get people outdoors New Year’s Day.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington State Parks said rangers will not guide First Day Hikes this New Year’s Day.
Adventure Awaits, the blog for Washington State Parks, lists several ideas for self-led First Day Hikes and activities.
Legislation that created the Discover Pass (a program that offers a $30 annual or $10 one-day permit for lands managed by Washington State Parks and the departments of Natural Resources and Fish and Wildlife) allows up to 12 free days each year when a pass is not be required to visit state parks.
