As a tree lover and professional landscaper, I sadly support the decision to remove the Sims Way poplars due to their age and condition.

Whoever chose that species was clearly not thinking long term since the lifespan and issues with Lombardy poplars are well known.

This time around I encourage the city to vigorously seek and support local input into the replacement tree selections. Other recent municipal plantings in Port Townsend have been designed by a Seattle landscape architect and lack the originality and pizazz that could have been.

Let’s learn from past mistakes and give local landscape architects or designers the opportunity to select the new tree species. Walk the talk. Go local.
