Kathy Tilly and Sue Stanton are the Port Townsend Gallery’s featured artists for May.
Tilly lives and paints on the Toandos Peninsula.
She’s a Washington native, born in Aberdeen, and spent her childhood in small fishing communities in Alaska and on the Washington coast. Tilly studied art in a two-year program at Grays Harbor College with artist Eric Sandgren, and photography programs at Clover Park Technical College, and Everett Community College. She continues to attend artist workshops online and throughout the Pacific Northwest.
She came to art full-time after a career in social work, and considers her education and work experience a factor in her art. A central theme in her art is the desire to tell a story using the human figure, where the inner life of her subjects is left open to interpretation.
An impressionist painter, Tilly looks to several well-known painters for inspiration and technique. According to the gallery, her use of a variety of supports and painting tools provides a dimension to the finished painting that is appealing and impelling to one’s imagination.
Stanton moved from Colorado to Port Townsend in 2012 after a career in primary education. Her introspective 3D artwork is inspired by her love of children and their whimsical perspectives. She also creates art pieces in watercolor, and pen and ink.
Her first medium was working with watercolors, and her love of drawing soon brought pen and ink into her paintings.
She also incorporates acrylic painting, wood burning, wirework, and added “findings” to engage viewers.
Tilly and Stanton will be at the gallery for the next art walk, scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 6. Light refreshments will be served.
The Port Townsend Gallery is located at 715 Water St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and also by appointment.
