Three Port Townsend wrestlers placed third on Jan. 12 during the 42nd annual Matman Tournament at Central Kitsap High School in Silverdale. Gabe Petrick, Dylan Tracer and Kyle Caldwell were co-third-place finishers in their respective weight classes. “Our wrestlers did great at this tough tournament with PT being the only 1A (school) there,” Port Townsend coach Steve Grimm said. “We wanted to see some tough competition. We sought this tournament out.” Grimm said there were three or four wrestlers in the Redhawks’ weight divisions who were ranked in the top 10 statewide at either the 3A or 4A classification. “We knew it was going to be tough, and the boys stepped up to get medals,” he said. “It was a good measuring stick for us. Our competition, they were good, but I think we’re right there with them.” At 160 pounds, Petrick had a first-round bye, then earned a 9-3 decision over Adam Fox of Central Kitsap. After an 8-2 loss dropped him to the consolation round, he pinned Clayton Lite of Black Hills in 30 seconds to medal. Tracer received a first-round bye at 182 pounds and then pinned Jon Tammen of Central Kitsap in 53 seconds. He dropped the semifinal but bounced back to pin Simon Atwill of Gig Harbor in 2:21. Caldwell split his first two matches at 195 and placed third with a takedown in an overtime round against Will Waymire of Gig Harbor. Grimm highlighted Port Townsend 120-pounder Carter Swartout, who trailed 5-1 with one minute left in a consolation-round match before a two-point reversal and a three-point near fall gave him a 6-5 lead. Swartout ended up getting the pin with 10 seconds remaining. Redhawks 126-pound freshman Logan Massie won two matches, although it was his 10-0 major decision loss to Shelton’s Cameron MacAlevy that turned Grimm’s head. “(Massie) was behind 10-0 and threw his opponent to his back and was looking for a pin to complete the upset, but the match was stopped early because the opponent’s mouth and nose were bleeding,” Grimm said. “He was so close to a big upset.” Port Townsend will travel to Vashon Island for a dual meet Jan. 17 at 6:15 p.m. and then to the End of Days tournament on Jan. 19 at Lakes High School.
