Speed limits changed for selected streets in Port Townsend

The city of Port Townsend will be establishing a unified speed limit for all edge lane roads, or ELRs, within city limits.

The speed limit for ELRs will now be 20 miles per hour following the Port Townsend City Council’s approval of an ordinance at Monday’s business meeting.

The ordinance was unanimously approved by the city council.

Edge lane roads (also known as advisory bike lanes or advisory shoulders) are a type of street in which two-way vehicle traffic shares a single, middle lane with wide lanes on both sides of the roadway for bicycles, pedestrians on foot, and other travelers. The style of street is most common in European countries like The Netherlands and Denmark, and is used to give a safe, reserved travel lane to cyclists.
