Smith understands the maritime world | Letter to the editor

I am the owner of a commercial fishing business, Cape Cleare Fishery. We need a County Commissioner who understands the complex scientific and economic issues related to Jefferson County’s fisheries, fish habitat, shorelines and maritime trades. That person is Lorna Smith.

Lorna has served as a county volunteer for eight years on the Conservation Futures Committee and Planning Commission and was recently named to the county’s Shoreline Task Force. Lorna had a 25-year career as a Snohomish County land-use and environmental manager. She has been instrumental in protecting thousands of acres of fish-rearing habitat.

Lorna cares about our marine environment and protection of our shorelines. She received national recognition for saving Protection Island and for stopping the ill-conceived Northern Tier Pipeline. She worked with Representative Mike Chapman to ban Atlantic salmon net pens in our marine waters. Lorna co-authored one of the first Habitat Conservation Plans prepared by a local jurisdiction in Washington state and also authored one of the country’s first local ordinances for wetland and stream protection.

Lorna was an owner of a 42-foot wooden Northwest troller that often hauled out for maintenance at the Port of Port Townsend shipyard. Lorna even used to live part of the year in a boathouse at the Port of Everett, where she became part of the close-knit boatyard community of fishermen, local craftsmen and marine trades business owners. Lorna Smith understands the maritime world and has my vote for Jefferson County commissioner!
