A Chimacum man faces nine months in jail and one year of probation after pleading guilty to a felony count of second degree assault with a deadly weapon and reckless endangerment – a gross misdemeanor, both charges linked to a shooting incident at Beckett Point.
Arnor Steven Aurdal, 65, was sentenced July 19 in Jefferson County Superior Court. At sentencing, Superior Court Judge Brandon Mack said, “Everybody agrees – Beckett Point, Jefferson County, the state of Washington – we can’t have people firing guns no matter how severe the conflict is. You crossed the line.”
On June 28, Aurdal entered guilty pleas to one count of assault in the second degree – deadly weapon—and one count of reckless endangerment. According to staff with the Jefferson County Prosecutor’s office, based on Aurdal’s criminal history he faced a sentencing range of six to nine months in jail. At the sentencing hearing, and in addition to jail time and probation, Mack required that Aurdal complete a substance use disorder evaluation and follow treatment recommendations.
Prosecutor’s office staff said Aurdal was eligible to possess a firearm at the time of the offense. However, because he has been convicted of a felony, he is now ineligible to possess firearms. Deputies seized Aurdal’s guns during their investigation.
Incident records indicate that sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Beckett point after receiving a call for shots fired. The reporting party told dispatch that his neighbor, Aurdal, had pulled a gun and fired it in his direction. Upon arrival, deputies located Aurdal in the passenger seat of a truck that was leaving the area of the shooting. Once the truck was stopped, Aurdal climbed out of the passenger seat. Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation but Aurdal refused to follow commands and was eventually tased and then restrained once he was on the ground.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Detective Brian Anderson led the investigation and learned that the entire incident was captured on security footage. In the video, Aurdal argued with his neighbor, then went to his truck and retrieved a firearm. Once armed, Aurdal approached the victim, waiving the gun around and pointing it at him. Aurdal’s wife attempted to intervene but her efforts were unsuccessful. Aurdal fired off a single shot near his wife’s feet, then approached the victim and fired a second shot near the victim’s feet. At this point, the victim delivered a right hook to Aurdal’s jaw, causing him to tumble to the ground. The victim then retrieved the pistol and called 911.
