The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a total of 323 calls for service from Feb. 28 through March 7. Deputies conducted 103 traffic stops, of which five resulted in criminal (misdemeanor and/or felony) charges.

Feb. 28: A caller in the Hadlock area reported a vicious dog had attacked their car. A deputy contacted the person via phone, and was told they only wished to have the owner of the dog control their dog, so it wouldn’t do this again, as this is the third time this has happened, apparently. The dog’s owner was located, and told that the dog’s behavior was not acceptable, and letting it run rampant would not stand. The owner understood.

March 1: A Port Townsend-area caller reported being the victim of check fraud, after a check deposited in the mail for a magazine subscription was intercepted by a criminal and altered to defraud the victim of $740. The case remains under investigation.

March 2: A caller in the Coyle region reported people shooting over the past few days. The caller was concerned that they may possibly be shooting in an unsafe manner, possibly toward the caller’s house, which made them feel unsafe. The caller reported the recreational shooters as “either target-practicing or an insurrection group.” The caller was advised of laws regarding shooting. Nobody was shooting toward or at the caller’s house.

March 3: A deputy scoured Highway 101, near the Highway 104 ramps, after the Washington State Patrol requested a deputy investigate a report of a semi-truck driving in the wrong lane. After 20 minutes of searching, no semi was seen driving going the wrong way.

March 4: A caller in the Chimacum area reported their vehicle had been stolen, after leaving it in a parking lot overnight. The caller requested a deputy return their call. After calling twice and leaving voicemails, as well as driving around the area where the vehicle had been stolen from, the deputy was unable to locate the reported victim. Nothing further was done, as the victim was unreachable.

March 5: A caller in Irondale reported their dogs barking at something around the house at approximately 1 a.m. A deputy went out to investigate, as the caller feared someone may have been prowling around the house. No footprints were seen around the house in the dewy grass, and no people were seen in the area.

March 6: A Port Ludlow caller reported hearing what they described as a woman’s blood-curdling scream coming from the woods. Deputies searched the area and flew a drone to determine if the noise had been from a human, or an animal. No people were located that could have produced the sound.

March 7: A Port Ludlow caller reported their trailer had been stolen, after leaving it, and a shed, at an address to get some things for the trailer, and its cargo, to make it safe and legal. When the owner returned, they discovered their trailer and shed were  gone. This happened sometime overnight. The caller requested deputies keep an eye out for their trailer.
