The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a total of 305 calls for service between Feb. 21-28. Deputies conducted 116 traffic stops, of which none resulted in criminal (misdemeanor or felony) charges.
Feb. 21: A deputy spoke with a Port Townsend area caller after they reported their neighbor was claiming the caller’s business on Google. The caller was advised that this is an issue that needs to be dealt with through Google, and possibly through a court order against the neighbor if this is part of an ongoing dispute.
Feb. 22: A caller in the Port Ludlow area reported they’d been scammed out of money by a person claiming to have their lost cat. The caller paid out some money, but refused to give the rest to the suspect when they demanded more for the return of the cat. The suspect then said they wouldn’t meet and return the cat if the money was not given. The caller contacted the sheriff’s office instead. The suspect never showed up, even when they claimed they were at the agreed meeting spot, where the caller was at. The phone number used for the scam was found to be involved in many scams of the same type around the country. An investigation is ongoing.
Feb. 23: A Hadlock caller reported they’d fallen victim to fraud after receiving a contact from “Elon Musk” on Facebook, claiming to be offering $30,000 for the victim to purchase a new car. No bank account information or money was lost, but some personal information was given out to the scammer. The caller was unreachable by a deputy when they attempted to contact them.
Feb. 24: A deputy responded to a report of a man driving a silver passenger car “being a bit much” in the Port Ludlow area. The man had pulled into a business’ parking lot and began “beating their vehicle.” The man was not being aggressive toward any people, just his car. Once a deputy contacted the man it was determined he was attempting to change out a headlight, but he did not have a new headlight to accomplish this task. He was advised to try again tomorrow after visiting a parts store, and to kindly leave the parking lot. He did so.
Feb. 25: Deputies assisted East Jefferson Fire Rescue with a house fire in the Port Townsend area. Nobody was home, fortunately, and the homeowner showed up some time after the fire was out, and spoke with the deputies and firefighters to confirm nobody was inside during the blaze. Another deputy assisted by flying a UAV, with thermal imaging, to assist with the fire marshal’s investigation.
Feb. 26: A caller in the Coyle area reported a bike on the side of the road. The bike had been there for about a week. A deputy was eventually able to get hold of the caller, who apparently stated they were not concerned about having the bike impounded, but were more concerned that someone no longer had access to their bike. The deputy advised that nobody had reported the bike stolen or missing.
Feb. 27: Deputies responded to a report of an assault in the Port Ludlow area. Apparently the suspect in this incident went over to the victim’s house, entered it, then attacked the victim. The suspect told the victim they “needed to get their saw back” for them, to which the victim had no knowledge of what this was about. The suspect was arrested.
Feb. 28: A man was arrested at the courthouse after refusing to abide by security protocol for entry into the courthouse. The man then reportedly attempted to walk past the courthouse deputy. The deputy attempted to stop the man, who then became physically combative. The man was arrested for assaulting the deputy.
